Interim Show City & Guilds 2018

This work was presented as an installation with video at the MA interim show. Cropping the video from 20 minutes to 6 minutes and changing it to black and white, keeping the canvas on the roll, were decisions to translate the complex issue of time. In this way I felt I could translate my experience in the moment to an experience of time by distilling elements of the overall work and thus condensing time. So by curating this work I translated the experience into an edited visceral response. With condensing Dance-Drawing I, I have laid the foundations for the next set of work and explorations.

I am driven by my experience of movement and sound: My work evolves in response to the unique soundscapes that grow from drawing in the physical presence of dancers. Dance – Drawing I is part of an ongoing collaborative exploration with movement artist Monica Giacomin, where we respond to each other symbiotically in the creation of the work. The mark-making and gestures on the canvas echo our experience of the moment. The video recording captures the performative process as figurative representation. In combining both aspects of the work I enquire into the correlation between representation and the gestural intuitive marks on the canvas.
